Top Important Reasons why you need to prioritise sleeping

When I was young, I was always asked to have a nap in the afternoon, especially on weekends. Does this sound like your childhood too?? Being able to sleep late at night has always been made to look so cool that’s why it’s always every child’s nightmare to hear about the word, “bedtime”. And lastly when we are feeling old enough but still a bit young, a curfew, so you get forced to stay awake within the four corners of your room with nerves within you that still want to party outside. We’re so eager to become an adult already, ain’t we?!

And then comes adulthood, where everyone who expects it to be so cool is faced with a ton of disappointment and left overwhelmed. What we have been fighting all those years of not being asked to sleep has been one of our wish list nowadays. How ironic!

Sleep is one of the most important part of our wellbeing, hence, should be included on the top 5 of your list of Self-Care. Here are the reasons why:

Brain Function: Sleep is very important for our brain to function. The more we lack sleep, the more our minds become cloudy and chaotic inside, not being able to make right decisions. Our brain would be slow in understanding things which could affect our way of living.

Immune system: When your body is able to get the rest it needs, your immune system is kept at its best and able to fight against various bacteria, viruses, and diseases. By avoiding sleep deprivation, you also avoid putting yourself at risk of common diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Regulate appetite: Having the means to buy food or a partner to eat with always isn’t the only reason why most people gain weight. There’s much more to it suck as poor sleeping habits. When you’re deprived from sleep, your body’s ability to regulate your appetite is affected as well. This may be the first time you hear about this, and if so, it’s my pleasure to be the person you’ve heard it first, “If you want to lose weight, make sure you have enough sleep. By simply keeping track of your sleep, you can be assured to keep your weight or lose weight without doing any other thing at all.”

Emotions in control: It’s never a good feeling to feel irritated at all times. Not only are you not able to function the way you want to but even affect the people around you as well. You tend to be short tempered, and if you’re a mom, it is guaranteed that your children would feel that heat from their hot headed mom. Try to avoid this by making time to sleep. There’s always tomorrow to continue with your long to-do list.

I’ve ended my 2nd paragraph with the phrase, “How ironic!” And the more this blog post comes to an end, the more I come to think about this couple of questions and mind-blowing common answers.

No eating – We panic, complain, felt like going to die which resorts to us doing all sorts of things just to make sure we’ll somehow have something to eat.

No sleeping – Felt cool and even brag to others how little sleep you had.

Why is this ironic? Because of our lack of knowledge on how important sleep is and not being able to prioritise to have which our body need more. Fun Fact: Our body can last 8-21 days without eating, or at most, 2 months guaranteed you have water to drink. Contrary to that, our body could only last 264 hours or 11 consecutive days before our body shuts off due to lack of sleep. One of the movies I’ve watched during Pandemic times that is surely related to this topic is the Netflix movie, AWAKE. I hope you find time to watch this and be an awakening to this bad sleeping habit.

So the next time you think you’ll not have enough time to sleep, how about try to have a nap. There’s a lot more on the benefits you can get from Napping.

Easy to start habits for a better Lifestyle

We all hear that life is better lived if you live a Healthy Lifestyle. But how does one live a Healthy Lifestyle? How much does it cost? How much time does it require to do?

Great news folks! Adapting to a healthy lifestyle isn’t as hard as you think it is. You don’t even need to exert extra time for it. What you’ll need though is a hefty mind set to change. Adapting to this easy to follow great habits needs consistency.

Don’t worry much though. That’s why it’s called a habit. You make it your auto-pilot instead of the not-so-healthy lifestyle you’ve been currently having.

So here’s how you do it:

UPON WAKING, DRINK LEMON WATER. There’s tons of benefits you can get from doing this. You most probably will be drinking water when you wake up, so just squeeze some lemon and you’re good to go!

BEFORE EATING, DO DEEP BREATHING FOR 3 MINUTES. This helps flood your body with oxygen, which will inculcate the habit of mindful eating. Amazing right?!

EXERCISE 3-5 TIMES A WEEK. There’s always time to do this. Too busy with work? Use the stairs instead of the escalator on your way to work. Too busy with housework? Do some squats while waiting for the dinner to simmer. As I’ve told you, it’s the mindset that we need to twerk here. We always have time. It’s how we use it that makes a difference.

LAUGH UNTIL YOU ALMOST PEE YOUR PANTS. Have you noticed how you somehow lost that silly and giggly part of you as you grow old? Blame it to ever growing responsibilities that seemed to never end that’s put on our shoulders. Despite that fact, ensuring the child in us still remains, us laughing our hearts out, not only makes us feel younger but also makes life lived happier. There’s so much to be grateful and happy in life, so why not celebrate, right?!

FIND TIME TO DO SELF-CARE. You might be wondering how there isn’t any on the list yet that would cost you a leg or arm, then this comes up ,and you’re like, AHA! This surely would be expensive…try again! There’s much more Self-Care that you can do that won’t cost you anything at all. Meditate, go for a nature walk, stretch.

GO TO SLEEP AT THE SAME TIME EVERY NIGHT. Sleeping at the same time almost guarantees you to wake up at the same time as well. You do this in preparation for your next day. As our body clock recognises this cycle, it builds strong desire for sleep throughout wakefulness which makes you sleep better the following night. As this cycle continues, our body is able to have that full rest it needs which makes our body more alert and healthy.

STOP EATING 2 HOURS BEFORE BED. If we eat until before we sleep, we are making our body do overtime instead of it going for a rest just like we do. This results for us feel heavy and tired even upon waking up.

SET DAILY AFFIRMATIONS. Our mind is more powerful than we think it is. When our mindset is in its great disposition, you’re able to create better output in whatever you are doing. Your mood is better, you feel happier, and you are better to be with. Feeding your mind early in the morning helps make this happen. What’s great with this is that it doesn’t take much of your time to say or read an affirmation or two, so why not?!

Energy is endless. Too often we are depleting our energy because we are allowing people to take it away. Set healthy boundaries and feed your body with healthy food, water, and nutrients it so desperately needs and don’t forget to feed your mind too!

If you’re a mom, you might want to read this as it is made specifically for YOU!

Learn More On How To Get The Best Sleep Companion You Need

This Blog post is sponsored by HyggeB. Make sure to follow them on Instagram @hyggebstore for their latest deals.

Sleep is one of the foundation of basic physical and mental health. There’s lots of important things that happen in your brain and body when you sleep.

Your brain works hard in forming pathways necessary for learning and consolidating the information you’ve taken in that day. That’s also one of the reasons why children needs more sleep than adults. They’re “still” developing brain and body needs more time to configure the information they’ve been absorbing throughout the day. That’s also another reason why they’re brains absorb more information like sponges.

So if you want to be as snappy with information like when you’re younger, then better start having that good sleeping habit.

It’s no secret that as one enters adulthood, sleep deprivation is much prevalent. It may due to responsibilities, work schedules, or simply negligence of ones self in order to give way to some unnecessary time consuming “not-so-good” habits like scrolling in social media on the phone for hours in bed or binge watching on the TV.

I’m not here to do some lecture as I myself fall victim to those same excuses as well. Nobody’s perfect but our actions to make our intention to develop a better sleeping habit counts. And that’s what matters.

If having the intention to change still haven’t dawned on you, perhaps having more knowledge about how sleep can impact your mood, energy, memory, ability to focus and productivity can help you more to be motivated to helping yourself be a better you.

Now that you’ve had your perfect companion in having a better sleep, you might be asking, how to do it? This may sound silly as sleep is something so common for people to do but a lot of people not know how to do (or so need a bit of help). Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

How to do it?

Make sleep a priority. Do not make other plans when it’s time to sleep. Aren’t we all guilty with this?? We all roll-up the sheets and prep for bed but reach out to our phones or the remote control. C’mon!

Create a sleep routine. Wake-up, wind-down, and certain bedtime you’ll rigorously follow. Moms would know that this is very important especially for babies, but what we shouldn’t forget that this applies for adults as well. It may be for a later time during the night, but still, maintaining that certain time of the day for your body to know that it’s sleeping time already helps you overall well being (you might not just notice it).

Practice good sleep hygiene. It’s been a norm already in this generation to have a TV in bedrooms. If you have the option to put the TV else where, then, do it. Use your bed for sleep only. It’s time to start breaking the habit of watching TV on the bed.

Exercise. Physical can make you feel tired. While we all know exercise as a form of body work to build up muscles and make our heartbeat go fast, exercise can also help make you relax. Go for a walk after dinner, relax, and stretch your body as if you’ve just woke-up. I personally have been stretching for months now once I’ve set myself in bed to sleep and indeed, it makes a difference. It felt like I instantly become relaxed and my body was put into a mood to sleep.

Eat a balanced diet. You are what you eat! What you eat throughout the day doesn’t matter as you’ve got the time to burn those calories you’ve accumulated as you go along your day. As the sun goes down though and it’s towards bedtime, you would want to avoid sugary snacks and drinks including alcohol or anything with caffeine.

Avoiding high carb intake is also helpful. Though you may feel heave and sleepy after having a hefty meal, carbs actually reduce the amount of time your body spends in deep sleep cycle cause it needs to do its duty to grind those carbs for you. Remember, the number of hours of sleep is only recommended but the quality is much more needed.

Still not sold that better sleep can help you enormously?! Read the benefits yourself!

Benefits of having great sleep:

It boost your immune system. With Covid-19 still lurking around, it’s best to have our immune system on tip-top! Having ample sleep every night helps fight off infections like cold or flu.

Sleep also prevents you from gaining weight. You read that right! If you don’t sleep enough, your body produces a hormone called ghrelin, which boosts your appetite. Could you believe that!? Why not try it, this might be your missing link into getting your body to its best shape.

Sleeping also increases your heart function. Not having enough sleep can lead to production of cortisol which can contribute to high blood pressure.

It also improves your mood. Don’t you just feel grumpy the moment your alarm rings in the morning when you didn’t have enough sleep? Indeed, having a good night’s rest will help you find yourself energised and excited to take on your day. You’ll also improve your productivity and be able to focus more.

Improve your memory. We’ve been adapting this habit of blaming memory loss or simply being forgetful to our age. The older we get, it’s not unusual to get forgetful. Well, maybe it isn’t. Maybe we just need more sleep to regain our memory.

As mentioned earlier, our brain still works even at sleep. Not having enough sleep makes your mind not function properly. So stop blaming “mom’s brain” or memory loss to old age, just get enough sleep and you’ll be at your top game!
