Nutrition is one of the most aspects of Physical Self-Care. Mainly because it’s the one of the best way to nourish our body, which is through eating. Know as the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the relationship between diet, health, and disease.

Having good nutrition also means caring for yourself as you understand the relationship of the food you take-in and its effect for you to create a better sense of balance in life.

Sadly, we are only thought of the basics of nutrition in school (a place that most of us thought would teach us everything we would need to be better prepared for life). As a matter of fact, s I’m reviewing my daughters for their science exams yesterday (they’re currently in Primary 1 &2), that’s when I realise that we were only thought of the food pyramid. You know, the Go, Grow, and Glow foods?!

With every marketing ad we encounter everyday selling unhealthy food, would that be enough???

Benefits of eating well/ having good nutrition:

  • It gives you the energy you need to keep active throughout the day
  • It gives you the nutrients you need for growth and repair, help you stay strong & healthy, and prevent you from diet-related illness

That being said, it’s not hard to deny how important nutrition is. But how and where to start, you might ask? Great question! It starts with planning your meals and knowing where to buy them.

The Source Bulk Foods Singapore is the best place to get every natural and bulk goods you’ll need to cook the best delicious meals without compromising its nutritional value. What’s great about this shop is that you can get quality food and great healthy options and save yourself from thinking much about the environment as you enjoy their products with a zero-waste approach.

They cater to wheat and grain free, paleo, vegan, and organic devotees. They also provide alternatives for those with intolerances and allergies. Everything that you’ll need, right?!

They have stores in Australia, New Zealand, UK and got two existing outlets here in Singapore at Cluny Court and Great World City. There’ll be another one coming soon this November at Northshore Plaza.

Make sure to follow them in their Instagram account @thesourcesg to be one of the first to know about new promotions or products.

Here are other things you can do to practice to make sure your nutrition is in tip-top:

Take multivitamins everyday. We each know how great or poorly our diet could be at times. This helps to make-up on those nutrient deficiencies that can have major impact on how we feel mentally, physically, and emotionally everyday.

Get colourful. The more colour the better nutrition you get. Load your plate with fruits and vegetables.

Eat regularly. Emptying your tank only causes fatigue, low energy, brain fog, and feeling hungry. When you finally do eat, the first thing any human would commonly do is to overeat, then feel guilty afterwards. You don’t want to do that.

Don’t be afraid of fat. We tend to forget of the healthy fats we also and can consume daily. This can be found in fish, olive oil, avocado, and nuts.

Adopt an 80/20 mindset. 80% mindful eating or sticking to nutrition-related goals and 20% being just you is enough to leave you to be human and feel less stressed and guilty with your eating habits.

Ditch your diet. Your body needs nourishment not restriction. Nutrition is a better half of Self-Care. The notion of dieting and having all these restrictions results to guilt and stress. That defeats the point of Self-Care in general.

The bottom line is thin of food and nutrition as nourishment and fuel for your body. You don’t want to load your car with gasoline when you know it works on diesel only. Find the right balance. Don’t beat yourself up for having a slice of cake. Just make sure you eat a variety of healthy food to balance it out.

Great Benefits you can get from drinking water

We all know the importance of water in our life and body. The fact that earth is covered with 71 percent of water, this must be a great indication on its importance.

I myself have had this issue with my water intake that it even resulted to complications during my first pregnancy. Luckily, my OB and great timing saved both my daughter and I from risk.

Aside from the usual benefit you can get from drinking water, which is to avoid dehydration, there’s much more this habit can do to our body.

Benefits of Drinking Water:

  • Gives your immune system a boost
  • Prevents headaches
  • Keeps digestion healthy – helps major organs function properly
  • Helps skin stay healthy
  • Aid in weight loss
  • Helps your kidneys to better flush toxins
  • Help prevent bad breath

As many as those benefits can give you from simply drinking water, the drawbacks can give a negative effect on your body and state of mind. It can give leave you thirsty, tired, and sluggish which can result to a negative impact on your mood.

The good news is, if you’re like me who really find it hard to drink that recommended 8-10 glass of water a day is we can forget about that.

The real fact is, water intake should depend on your activity level, health, as well as your weight. An active person are the ones who should intake 8-10 glasses of water. If you’re not an active person and is not keen on drinking that much water, then you’d like to check on the exact water intake you really need.

You can use this Hydration Calculator and maybe find out that you only need a lesser amount but still have a well-hydrated body.

Drinking water can be overwhelming. Do not stress yourself on being a pro-water drinker! Make small changes on your routine instead and see significant changes overtime.

How to start this habit:

Start lessening your intake of sugary drinks such as soda, sports drinks, and energy drinks. You may notice how I said it as lessening instead of quitting immediately on it. One tip in building a habit is doing it slowly or really go through a step by step transition in doing so.

You may still have experience some detox symptoms like irritability, fatigue, and cravings from your changing of lifestyle but at least you aren’t feeling that much stressed and deprived which can make you feel like wanting to quit sooner than you want to from your new found goal.

Know that the more you drink water, your cravings will start to decrease. This detox phase is just normal and soon, you won’t be going back on your old ways of being sugar dependent. You are more powerful than your cravings.

Drink infused water. Transitioning from some flavoured drink to plain water isn’t enticing for anyone. Being plain may even be one of the main reasons why we have this urge to choose those sugary drinks after all. Deceiving your brain can sometimes do the work by drinking infused water instead.

All you need to do is to add fruits to water, and that’s it! The longer the fruit is infused, the tastier the water. I like mine infused overnight. There’s also tons of fruits you can use to do it other than the well known, lemon water. Here are some infused water ideas you can follow.

Eat your water. There’s much more food can give us and that includes contributing to our water intake. Here are some vegetable and fruits that can be a great source of water. See below and be amazed on how much water these variety of food have:

Strawberries – 92%

Watermelon – 92%

Grapefruit – 91%

Cantaloupe – 90%

Peach – 88%

Cucumber – 96%

Lettuce – 96%

Celery – 95%

Radish – 95%

Zucchini – 95%

Drink Carbonated water. This may also help make the trick as others just got used to that “spirit” feeling whenever they drink and can forgo the sugar from their drink instead.

Slowly lessen buying unhealthy drinks for your home. This would make a big difference as even though you may say that you aren’t home that much, you still live there. Having those hours at home without any sugary drinks beyond your reach is a great start to your transition to a good habit.

Set water goals. Having a water tracker can be helpful or even those big water bottles which have timings that keeps you motivated to drink per hour. Aside from seeing how much you’ve drink and how much more you need to, those short encouraging words such as “You’ve got this”, “Don’t quit”, or “Think healthy” can help a lot.

Make small changes. Progress always beats perfection when it comes to building a new habit/lifestyle. You’d like to make sure that what you’re starting would last forever. Building your foundation really strong makes you defy you from looking back to your old ways.

Make a commitment to Self-Care. It would also help that you incorporate other Self-Care habits when you do this transition. If you’d like to see major changes within you, it would be advisable to adopt some healthy eating habits or exercising as well.

These Self-Care habits complement well with Drinking water and goes hand-in-hand with it that you won’t even notice you doing them.

You may want to ask your hubby or partner to join you in this new journey. You can always bring along your kids without a doubt and this would be a great opportunity for them to bring good habits along with their adulthood. Having a companion in doing something new always helps you keep motivated to doing it.

6 Proven Ways to Fight with Stress and Anxiety

Life nowadays has been tougher than ever. Not only are we faced with the usual demand to cope us with our responsibilities. With the Pandemic still affecting more and more each day, all we could do is to learn, and learn fast I mean on how to cope with the Stress and Anxiety this brings.

Not only is our health compromised but most of all our mental being. Thinking how your source of income is stable enough to withstand this critical times that’s been hurting much economy and every industry you could think of but also not being able to have that rest you need for yourself despite being most of the time at home.

Despite everything that’s happening around us, it’s important to focus on the good things. Appreciating the small things you have can help you get through this gruelling times. Self-Care is at most needed and by that, I don’t mean going for a mani/pedi or having a facial at a spa. What I mean is taking care of what matters the most within you which is your mental well-being and health. When both of that are in a good place, everything follows.

Here are 6 Ways that could help you cope with Stress and Anxiety:

Acknowledge you feelings and take good care of your mental and emotional health. As adults with kids under our wing to take responsibility with, we often forget how important it is to take care of ourselves. Concentrating on having the basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter doesn’t seem enough nowadays as our mental and emotional health is deeply being tested.

Taking time for yourself has never been needed. Learn more about Tips on how to Maintain Mental Wellness here. If you are a mom, then read this too!

Taking breaks from social media. There’s always been two ways social media can affect us. It’s either you get inspired to do something about yourself but most often, admit it or not, we feel he opposite every time we look at our social media feed.

Know that there’s also two ways to correct that mindset: It’s by either not looking at them so you save yourself from feeling bad and instead settle looking at inspiring posts that motivate you, OR change your outlook and actually feel happy for other people’s success and for them looking great. You’ll be surprise how the this two simple change in mindset can affect your life.

Limit watching stressful news. Yes, I know. Watching or listening to news especially nowadays is very important. With government rules constantly changing as rapidly as how the virus mutate, we all need to be up-to-date with what is happening to our community. Despite this, it’s also important to know that you really don’t need to hear all this news all day long.

The more we hear/ read/watch depressing news, the more we unknowingly accept that negative energy to our lives. Who do you think would feel motivated with their day ahead when all you hear are how many new cases there have been and how many deaths has there been in the last 24 hours. NOBODY!

So, keep well-informed but not so much that your emotional and mental health is affected as well. Save yourself from that stress. We may be in a Pandemic but life is still a beautiful thing to live with. Don’t waste your time stressing on things beyond your control.

Take care of your body. The time has come where you really have no excuse but your own laziness to take care of yourself. With most still recommended to stay at home, use that time wisely.

  • Living on microwavable food as you don’t have time to cook? Here’s the time you can actually use your nice kitchen and make some healthy food.
  • Use those precious time you’ve been usually stuck in traffic or commuting to office to catch-up on more sleep or exercise.
  • Chasing always to reach home before bedtime just so you can put your kids to sleep? Fret no more, read a book with them and have some giggling time!

Take care of your body by eating healthy, doing some exercise to stretch those muscles you’ve barely know is there, and have a good laugh!

Unwind. Of course it’s always great to be able to fly somewhere to stay away from the hustle and bustle of our daily routine. It is important though to understand that that isn’t the only way to unwind. You don’t always need to run away from your life to get some peace. Why not live your life peacefully so everyday so you’ll always have that unwinding time.

Give time for you to reflect on the good things you have. Writing affirmations, journalling, meditating, doing yoga, or as simple as doing deep breathes can help you relax from the comfort of your own home sitting in your favourite couch.

Stay connected with others. No man is an island. Catching up with family and friends and knowing they are doing okay as well is very comforting. You don’t only make other people feel loved but you yourself feel great for reaching out and giving time for your loved ones.

Having great company and being around people that actually makes you feel happy is so comforting that it makes your heart at bliss.

Last but not the least is something we should be very vigilant about especially this days. As much as we don’t want to be in this situation, it’s important to know about it and be prepared in case it happens.

Know what to do if you are sick and how to get treatment. Nothing is more helpful to keep that mind in peace than knowing what to do in case the worst scenario happens. With Covid-19 lurking around, having the right information needed like who’s the healthcare provider or Medical Team to contact. Learning and understanding the benefits and risks of doing self care treatment is also a must.

5 Easy Money saving Tips at home that anyone can do

The virus which we all thought would just be for a week or month has been lurking around the world for more than a year and a half by now. And simply by looking at daily statistics, it for sure wants to stay a bit longer.

How has it affected your finances so far? Everyone for sure have felt an impact one way or another but the question now is, what are you doing to make this effect less on the negative side. With most governments still encouraging people to stay indoors, for sure most of us find the urge to do one thing… use our phone.

Checking on Social Media is a great way to check on friends and loved ones and simply to catch up. It’s been the modern way of picking up the phone and dialling to make a call. There’s also one thing Social Media can harm our finances if we don’t be mindful enough of our actions.

Have you noticed how many sponsored posts you see as you scroll along your Social Media account? It doesn’t matter whether you go in Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube. All of those commercials you’ve once hated on the Television has now moved to this great new avenue to encourage customers.

What’s more fascinating for me personally is great they are on tracking.

Looking for a computer chair? Simply search one time. It doesn’t matter if it’s in any internet browser or social media account and you’ll be surprised what happens next.

Yes, you’ve guessed it right! All your ads have now been changed to different advertisers selling computer chairs. This may be helpful if you’re really looking to buying one but if not, doesn’t it feel like you’re being pushed to buy one as well?! Worst if you’re one of those who easily get persuaded and give in.

Know that you aren’t alone in this and most of are in the same shoes as you, at home and only a few clicks away from spending. If I can control my spendings, then you can do too!

Here’s how to do it:

Do not save as default your credit card details

Most of us buy have purchased something online. From daily essentials to the things you won’t even imagine people would buy such as a Live Ant and its farm. How weird could that be?!

Purchasing online really can’t be avoided nowadays as this has become one great means of buying stuff. There’s a great side to this such as by doing so, you can help the economy and at the same time help flatten the curve of the virus. The downside however is the convenience it gives that at a simple click of a button, your purchase is done. Goodbye hard earned money.

One way to save yourself from this convenience is by NOT SAVING AS DEFAULT YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS. This has save us a lot of not necessary spendings. Give yourself sometime to think about that impulsive purchase. It doesn’t mean you’ve “Add to Cart” means you can “Check Out” that easily. Trust me, that simple 5 steps top up from where you’re sitting just to get your credit card from your wallet can save you unnecessary spendings.

Re-evaluate your Subscriptions

I’ve been a fan of Spotify since forever but never felt the need to give-in to their consistent ad to subscribe. I understand not everyone thinks like me. My sisters are premium members and never mind to spend $9.90 a month on it.

Here’s my side of the story though. What is a minute of patience and listening to their ads to $118.80 a year that I can save and use for other more important things?!

If you’re one of those who seems to be a member of every subscription service you can be of, then this is the time to scrutinise each one of them if they are really worth to keep, otherwise, it’s time to part ways.

Here are some of the Subscriptions you might want to look into:

1.Video Streaming Services such as Disney +, Netflix, HBO Max, etc.

2.Gaming Services such as Playstation Now, Xbox Game Pass, etc.

3.Music Services such as Apple Music, Spotify, etc.

4.Dating Apps such as Match, Tinder, Bumble, etc.

5.Fitness Services

6.Marketing Emails – is the best way to do this!

Reduce electricity

If there’s one thing most employees who work in offices miss during this Pandemic, that for sure is the centralised AC. That’s the only place you wouldn’t mind being in the cold all day as you don’t need to bare the cost of paying the electricity bill.

Working from home is a different story though. I guess aside from the usual distractions you might have working from home, the heat especially if you live in a tropical country like Singapore is one of the challenges why people can’t concentrate much working from home. Not that you can’t afford to buy an AC but if you use it 24 hrs a day, I’m sure it would hurt your pocket in one way or another.

Opening your windows to let the air come in your home can help do the trick. Doing that can also let natural light come in that you won’t feel the need to use lights. Using the ceiling or stand fan is also more cost efficient.

Cook your meals

This may be tricky as the culture here in Singapore has always been to buy meals from hawker centers. You may have a change of heart though if you learn that cooking your own meals can help you save money.

Do not know how to cook? That isn’t a problem nowadays as there’s YouTube. You can find how to cook any dish you can think of. And if you are to contest that you live alone and cooking is much trouble some, then I urge you to try meal planning.

Cooking 3 to 4 dishes that you can alternately eat throughout the week is way more healthier and cost efficient than eating out. Try it for a couple of weeks and you’ll be surprised how life changing it can be!

Track your Spendings

I’m not here to insult your brain in any way. I’m sure your memory works better than mine. But here’s one fact, our brain works like a computer. If you put too many information on it, no matter how big the RAM of computer is, there would come a time that it will slow down as its capacity has already been reached.

That’s why not matter how much advanced computers are nowadays, external hard drives are still a marketable business. There’s even “the cloud” nowadays as another option to save your files. If you still haven’t got the idea until now, then let me tell you straight. You need to unload your burdens.

Machines reach a certain capacity of burdens, and so are you. Making a list shouldn’t hurt your ego. Taking it as a tool to release whatever you have in your mind can help you focus and concentrate more on important things.
