5 Ways to Free your life through decluttering

Have you ever been to Japan or Singapore? I guess most of us would agree that these two countries are leading when it comes to cleanliness. While residents who live there might not agree that much as they’ve also seen the dirty side of town (nothing is perfect), let’s just agree that majority of its places are pleasing to the eyes.

Not only does the air smells fresher but also your mind seems to be at peace. It feels like all your troubles and worries are set aside. No wonder these two countries also top as tourist destinations. Why not?! That’s what you exactly want when you go on vacation right? Relax!

What if I tell you that you don’t need to go on vacation to feel relaxed or even just lessen the stress in your life. You can do that by slowly decluttering your life. By habitually exercising decluttering in this particular points in your life, you’ll be able to live stress-free.

Declutter your Mind

Let’s get real, our brains aren’t as good as we think it is.

As a mom, we often blame our forgetfulness to having a mom-brain. While it has been backed-up with science, its also important to be true to ourselves that at times, we just don’t want to accept that our brain could also use some help pen and paper(or Notes on your smartphone).

By writing down into a list things that we need to remember, we declutter our mind. The lesser things you worry about, the clearer you focus and think of the things you want to do. That’s my mantra to convince myself that I need to sit and write down for 5 minutes or so my to-do list for the day.

Declutter Spiritually

I may be Catholic but know that I’ve got my utmost respect for other religions. Not sure if that’s one of Singapore’s great influence to who I am today but having lived for a decade in one of the most multi-racial countries, it made me realise that there’s no inequality between races or religion, what’s missing our respect for other’s beliefs. I’ll dig more into that next time but for now, what I want to point out is how our religious belief can help declutter our lives.

Most people live their lives with believing that someone up above, greater that the greatest is watching us and the source of everything we have in our lives. With the help of prayer, letting go of our worries, and surrendering our problems to the most high, then we free ourselves from stress and able to enjoy what life has to offer.

Having this belief and not losing hope helps us realise of the good things in life and set a better mindset for us to live in peace.

Declutter your Social life

We all know how the people around us affect us in ways we can’t control. By understanding that you have control over your life, no matter what circumstances you’re in, you’ll have the ability to use your freedom of choice to choose what kind of life / environment you want to live in.

There’s tons of inspirational and famous people you can look up to in the Internet who you wouldn’t believe have been in a different path in life that what we know and see now.

With the help of being mindful of the people you want to surround yourself with and give influence to your life, you’ll have an insight of what path of life you’re leading to.

Declutter your Space

Fun fact: Not all of us have that affinity to being minimalism.

Not to worry though, you’re human and it’s part of being human to like owning material things. There’s no shame being that kind of person as long as you can afford it.

Another Fun fact: You can still buy things, as much as you want, as long as you know how to store them properly.

The effects of owning too much material things can be daunting if you don’t know how to take care of them. Come to think of this — you work so hard to buy things you like/ love then afterwards never take care of if (store it properly) then it’s as if you work for nothing. All your precious stuff would soon look like disorganised junk.

You might just not acknowledge the fact but seeing this mess everyday in your house is affecting your life. Imagine waking up everyday with all your stuff all over your home. Don’t wonder why why people love going to home furnishing retailers like IKEA. They sure design the showrooms as neatly as possible so you’ll feel relaxed imagining living in a place like that. Declutter your Finances

This may be one of the reasons why adulting can be stressful. The moment you’ve got financial responsibilities over your shoulder, it’s the real deal. Unbeknownst to many, your financial stress not only affects you financial problems (duh!) but your whole life, so by making sure you keep your finances under cover, you’re partly making your life better as well. Good thing there’s easy ways though to lessen that stress and can be done no matter what financial level you’re in.

Here are simple things you can do to lessen that financial clutter in your mind:

  1. Have a loving relationship paying your bills – this may seem stupid to hear but when you have a great mindset in doing things, doing it makes it easier to do and all things related to it flows naturally. This means, the money you need to pay your bills comes naturally as well. Talk about Law of Attraction! This would cross out one of the things you worry every month!
  2. To make sure do #1 in a smooth manner, making a list of due dates of all your payables (utilities, rent, tuition fees, etc). By making sure you pay them on time, you don’t only give yourself a pat in the back for making sure all your financial responsibilities are kept in good shape but you’ve also made sure not to pay interest. Those small amounts for paying late adds up especially when your pocket is on the tight end.
  3. No matter who’s in charge in your family to do the grocery, make sure to make a grocery list. This would not only help you not to go over-budget but you’ll also eliminate buying food that you don’t actually need and eventually put to waste. Food wasted also means money wasted.

Be inspired by the greatest people in the world

One of the most awaited time in the field of sports have finally started. Yes, I’m talking about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Despite all the setbacks caused by the Pandemic, the best of the best people in their own craft gathered to compete.

What better way could you get and be inspired to be the best version of yourself but to see these amazing people on how they persevered, believed and succeeded..

What I loved about the Olympics and any other sporting events is knowing that these people are ones just like you and me. Yes! They are ordinary people who took the leap of faith, did their part despite all the circumstances and conquered. What an amazing feeling could it be, right?

Gladly, we don’t need to be an Olympian to justify that. By simply being the best version of ourself is enough. Let’s dive into it and make it simpler, shall we?

An Olympian have a CLEAR Long-term Goal.

Everyone have goals. It doesn’t matter whether it is a short-term and long term ones but most people create goals that are so vague that they don’t even realise it. Do you do New Years Resolution too? How many times have you promised yourself and made it your goal “that year” that you’ll loose weight?

I’m putting this down on writing cause I know this is one of the most typical goal women especially moms have on their list and that includes me. What I learned this year though is that saying/ writing that I’ll loose weight isn’t enough. You need to be clear in your goal. Can’t articulate what I mean by that? Well, if you just say I’ll loose weight, yet again, just like what you’ve been doing years prior, you’ll end up with the same old results.

An Olympian is consistent.

What failure? What pain? What critics? I guess one characteristic we all can emulate from these great personalities from the Olympics is their perseverance to stand up after every downfall. I’m not just talking about not being able to do things immediately or properly but also standing for what they want in life.

Many may think that it’s the trial and error in practicing their craft until their master it up is the most difficult part of being great. It isn’t. It is the power of the mind to surpass every negative comment or critic one gets from the society and themselves included that’s most critical. That power to still go on despite all these and not letting their mindset be affected helps them be consistent and surpass every hardship.

Have the Discipline.

It’s no secret that if you want to be the master of your craft no matter what it is, your discipline in doing that should be superb. The power of knowing when to say “NO” is very much important.

As a mother, we’re most known for being that “martyr” of giving all to our family especially our children. While this is fairly true to all mothers, we must be mindful in knowing that Parenting or being a mother is in our instincts, Self-care isn’t. That’s why it is important that we focus our mindset more on how to make ways to care for ourselves first.

Having the discipline to prioritise our happiness will resonate with out family and children as well. Master this and you’ll surely enjoy motherhood.

Enjoy the moment.

Ask any athlete why they indulge themselves and their lives in playing their sport and you’ll hear the typical answer, because I love playing “xxxx”. Before being a master of whatever they are, they first fell in-love doing it.

Why is it important to find joy in what you’re doing and not rely on other people your happiness? Because like any walk of life in this world, there would be hurdles. If your satisfaction depends on others and honesty to yourself isn’t there, there would always be regret in the end. Every human is different. One can feel like in cloud nine with just a bag of candies while others may opt a box chocolates. Both may be sweet and give your body the same energy but the happiness each would be if they get what they specifically want is different.

Knowing how to enjoy your own moment at a specific time no matter what your circumstance is and no matter what others think/ say is pure delight.

Support system.

Like any athlete, one needs to have their own tribe who supports them no matter what. Knowing how to delegate other tasks for you to be able to be your own best is a necessity.

Mother’s especially SAHM (Stay at Home Moms) are most know of doing everything around the house while the Father is the “so-called” money-maker who just goes in and out the house and make sure the finances is well settled. Scrap that idea!

Everyone who lives in your home is part of your home and therefore must be treated like one. That being said, each one also take part of a task at home, children included.

Delegate tasks to every member of your family. Children as young as 2 years old can help as well (ehem! sorting laundry?) This not only makes your life easier but also makes them feel that they belong.

If there’s one thing we all could learn from these amazing athlete’s is that finding their own happiness first and having the mindset to priorities themselves is critical to being the best in your own craft. Approval of society and whoever you want to please will come after. It is your own satisfaction and happiness that needs to be on top of your goal list.

3 Practical lessons living in Singapore taught me about Self-Care

It’s funny how time flies so fast especially when you enjoy what you’re doing or where you are, isn’t it? For us, that’s what really happened. What originally planned as to be a year or two of finding opportunity here in Singapore turned out to be a decade where we our little family made it as its playground.

Truly the opportunities this country has given us has been great and with the guidance of the One above, our lives seems to be really planned out well. We really are just grateful of everything now.

Since Singapore would be celebrating its 56th National Day soon, I thought of doing this article. So what has Singapore taught me in the past decade and how could it be related to Self-Care?

Singapore is also well known as the “little red dot” and it isn’t called that way for no reason. If you try looking in a globe like my daughter’s, I tell you it really is easy to miss that “little red dot” as it really is small if you try finding it without any hint of where it is in the planet.

What’s amazing though is even as one of the smallest nation, it was able to climb up to the top and be recognised as one of the First World Countries in the world. So what set them apart from the others? They for sure aren’t a rich country when it comes to natural resources. I tell you, even the water that flows in our faucet is imported mostly from Malaysia.

If you noticed how young their nation is, you’ll be surprised that it’s age is fairly young and just the same age of most of your folks, which means before that time, they aren’t this kind of nation we all see on top.

So what changed and how did it happened? Below are some of my points which I like to point out that everyone can do too to ourselves if we apply as well. If a nation with little natural resources can be successful, so can you!

Putting Yourself First

Singapore as a Nation

If you didn’t know, Singapore was formerly part of Malaysia. It was due to Political unrest and economic differences that resulted in Singapore’s expulsion from Malaysia which let to Singapore’s independence on August 9, 1965. It is after that when the famous nation’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew took leadership. And truly despite its lack of natural resources, it found its way on how to succeed by focusing on what its nation have and making the most out of it and succeed.

How it can relate to you

Most of us usually play part martyr when it comes to taking care of our loved ones. We do this despite knowing the fact that we also need caring for ourselves. Disregarding this fact may have a long time effect not only in our relationship with our loved ones. Not only do we deep unvalued but also feel regretful of not being able to do what we want.

By putting yourself first in all things that you do, you are able to fill up your cup and be fully ready to give to others. There won’t be any remorse of regret in the end that you aren’t able to do thing you wanted. You’ll also be fully honest not only with your loved ones but with yourself that you’re able to give your care and love with the best version of yourself.

Discipline

Singapore as a Nation

There’s no secret that Singapore is also known as “The Fine City”. Not “fine” as in good quality but “fine” as in needing to pay for doing various things forbidden. Yes, and in Singapore, even as simple as chewing a gum is forbidden. Puzzling right, especially if you grew up in a different country where chewing gum is usually done innocently just like having eating some candy.

It may have been one of the hardest days of any Singaporean to live in when most of the things they got used to doing is suddenly forbidden but look at the nation now after just 50+ years and what it has been able to achieve. Truly those sacrifices have paid off well more than they expected and what’s greater than that is what the generation of today are able to experience and enjoy. It’s like giving a gift to your granddaughters/sons for them to live in a safe environment and a nation which they can depend on.

How it can relate to you

As simple as this word can be, it can be one of the hardest thing to do. Those early mornings you wake up just to make sure you are able to do your routine exercise before the whole household starts its chaos not only helps you keep your mind at peace but also knowing that you’ve given yourself a portion of your time in your day is something admirable.

Wanting to achieve something isn’t just about having the right resources but having that discipline within you to do whatever it takes. Life is full of hurdles and hardships and it’s only if you have the discipline to continue that will give you the motivation to continue. Without that, it’s very easy to give-up half way and never succeed.

Goals are achievable when you have the mindset

Singapore as a Nation

When Singapore got its independence, it has its goal in hand and a mindset that they can succeed. It didn’t matter if their nation lacked natural resources —they made sure to have financial resources to cover up for that and be able to import all the things the nation needs, it didn’t matter if their nation is once filled up with gangs — they made sure to change that and be disciplined enough to be recognised as one of the countries with the lowest crime rate in the world, and lastly, it didn’t matter if their nation is small — by focusing on what they have (their location) they are able to have the world’s busiest cargo seaports, be a leader in exporting electronics manufacturing and machinery, have highly driven financial services and tourism.

How it can relate to you

Well, you are you. And you aren’t just any person, you are as great and important as those well-known people in history and today IF YOU FOCUS ON YOURSELF, WHAT YOU HAVE AND YOUR GOAL.

Most people think almost immediately about the difficulties they “might” face along way, or their lack of this and that as a reason for not pursuing their goal. I tell you now, it isn’t any other person, thing, or circumstance that’s stopping you but you.

Find a way to change that mindset and start believing in yourself and everything is achievable. Perhaps start with simple things like being able to wake up early every morning to click in some “me-time” that you could either use as a time to just sip your “hot coffee” in peace or even go for a walk or run. Starting with small steps and small achievements can give you motivation in doing bigger things and bring out that confidence that you can do it because you are you!
