Every mom’s with little ones Self-Care Secrets

Self-Care what?

I know and I understand the frustration moms feel when people say it’s just 5 or 10 minutes of your time. How hard could that be? Well, it’s pretty damn hard!

Being a mom myself, I have had my personal struggles. I’m not gonna lie I had an enormous help from our helper when my daughters was younger, specifically the first 4-5 years of their life. I was also working then so I’d say my motherhood experience during those times where quite easier. I remember my hubby and I could even go for movie date nights after the kids doze off cause there’s someone we trust that we could leave our babies with.

Two years ago though, that changed and though my daughters graduated those milk and diaper stage, them demand of attention from me haven’t changed. Add to that the pressure of needing to man a household isn’t for the faint hearted. The OC in me was pretty much challenged as tried my best to being into life the picture perfect home (squeaky clean and organised), happy kids, well-noticed hubby and a calm smiling mother who have time to manicure her nails.

Beep!Beep!Beep! There goes my alarm and I stop daydreaming.

Here’s the reality of the first few months of being a SAHM. We came back from vacation thinking we’ll just settle in our usual routine sans our helper only to find out that the owner of our rental have accepted an offer from a different lessee and we’ll have to vacate our unit in a month. So much for a great start! So there I was frantically boxing all our belongings, bringing and fetching the kids to school and trying to keep my household afloat. Not to mention my daughters ever helpful school schedule – my eldest going from 8am to 12nn while my youngest 1pm-4pm. Their school is merely a 15 minute walk and with small feet walking with me, that’s 30 minutes one way or about 2 hours gone from my hectic day.

This post isn’t about my complains though but just to emphasize that I am like any other mom who struggles but still found a way to find time for herself. Why? Because caring for yourself shouldn’t feel like more work. With a everyday being busy day, it’s important to learn how to incorporate self-care into your daily routine. How could that be possible? Read along ang realise how easy it could be done. You might be surprised you’re doing it already and just not being mindful of doing it. This may be the reason to why you don’t feel grateful for it.

Find joy in what you’re doing

Now this may vary as everyone has a different manner of finding joy. For some, it would their love for cooking while for others it could be exercising as a way to relax. No matter what makes you happy, then that’s the part in your routine that you need to focus on.

For me, it’s definitely cooking. That’s why I purposely cook when my kids are napping (when they were younger) or nowadays, that’s the time I allow screen time. I not only get 30 minutes or more of joyful time cooking and the kids as well have their happy time watching TV or using gadgets.

Don’t feel ashamed of letting your guard down for letting your children use gadgets/ watch TV (if you’re one of those parents who’s too conscious of doing so). Believe me, the return of giving yourself that small amount of time to do something you love “happily” (even if it’s technically a need to do so) would make big a difference in how your day would go.

Here’s why. You know you love cooking but whenever you cook, you have a child who cries nonstop begging for your attention. There’s two things that could happen.

  1. You get frustrated because you know for yourself that you want what you’re doing but you know your child wants you (hello Mom-guilt!).
  2. You give in to your child’s demands but can’t hide how annoyed you are for being defeated and not being able to do what you want (yes, you’re still human even if you’re a mom)

It doesn’t matter whichever you choose, both will result to both you and your child feeling bad at each other. Does it makes sense now?

Use screen time wisely

We live in the modern world and no matter we like it or not, technology would play a big part of our lives. If that’s the case, why not use it into good use right? Anyways, that’s one of the reasons why technology is continually being developed. It is to make our lives easier, not harder.

I think I’ve given a perfect example on how to use screen time wisely on earlier. Here’s another way of using it though. Let’s say you love exercising.

Why not let your kids join you enjoy the fun! There’s a lot of exercise game options nowadays and your kids won’t even notice you’re doing it. What’s great with this is not only that you’re able to do what makes you happy but you also slowly instil in your child the habit of exercising and who knows, with all that energy exhausted, you might even have some quiet time when they go for a nap an hour later. Cheers to that!

Have a routine

This is something I abide to even when I was still working. Back then, I would make sure to remind our helper to follow our routine. This allowed her to do house chores while not compromising the taking care of our two young daughters.

Now that I’m a full-time mom and my daughters are old enough to follow directions, life still haven’t been easy. hahaha…surprise!!! That’s part of parenthood maybe but having a routine that both you and your children mentally are programmed to do would help your day flow smoothly.

Rest with your kids

Lastly, rest with your kids. No matter how much work you still have to do, make sure you rest within the day. Hey, mothers may be superheroes but we’re human too! It is only when you get to recover your strength that you’ll be able to do more. It may not give you more time to do things but know that its not always time we need to get things done but also how things is done.

Just the term alone gives makes everyone giddy and want to know how to do it and be it! Are you one of them too?

For others it means being able to buy everything and anything they want while for others, it may mean not needing to work. Here’s the catch though, Financial Freedom doesn’t really have a concrete definition. Instead, it is a lifestyle one wants to be in. 

Who wouldn’t! No need to think about how to pay the bills but still having more left as savings, or having a fully emergency fund set aside. Anyone would love to be in that position in life. But life isn’t that easy for most. Being the one in-charge to make decision (life-decisions) doesn’t make it any easier. Having the freedom to choose what and how to deal with circumstances in life and deal with the consequences of it is a hefty task! No wonder no matter how liberating being an adult could be, others would rather live like a child. No worries, no problems, easy life!

How do you gauge Financial Freedom, some would ask? While answering this may vary, here are the most common signs you’re headed towards that direction. 

1. You’re not a Financial prisoner

Having bills to pay, essentials and needs to be taken care of and other responsibilities in life (most of them) that needed you to be financially capable is perfectly normal. Yes! Even the riches people in the world, or even people with power deal with those responsibilities too! Well, not to the extent though of them actually scrambling for a job just to make ends meet neither pay those bills personally. They have specific people already doing those things for them. And that’s basically what everyone should aim to have.

Not the part where you don’t need to pay your bills personally but at least not be in that position to be scrambling to find money to pay them. 

Having a job doesn’t mean you’re on the right track either. That still depends, as if you hate your current job, then that simply means you’re being held captive of your job just so you could stay afloat financially. While this is what most people are into, this shouldn’t be the way to live. Life is too short to spend it in doing things you don’t like.

Don’t get me wrong though, loving a job doesn’t mean the job needs to be easy. Everyone needs a little challenge in everything they do in life for them to feel alive. If not, that job would better be given to a robot then. 

2. Know you what you want. Is it Financial Freedom you’re really aiming for or Financial Capability?

The word Freedom makes it very lucrative for anyone to fall for it but is it what we really want? Just to be free of financial worries, be able to stay at home and no need to work, no need to think of bills no more responsibilities, no, no, no! I’ll make the story cut-short, that also means you want to die already. Too harsh? Not really, that’s reality. If what you aim in life is just for the sake of breathing, then what makes you better than a person in coma with machines hooked up on them to breath?

One should live a life with purpose. Find value of themselves. You might be wondering hearing rich people often say they’re very busy working. Working? With all those money under their belt and still working? While some may say they’re just being greedy, that’s not really the reason though, for them, being rich doesn’t mean their purpose in life have ended already. 

There’s more to life to explore and be. And that’s how life should be lived. Aim for Financial Capability for it takes away the stress you’ve always hated doesn’t give your mind and body the impression that you’ll live like a vegetable in the days to come. In fact, there’s much more you can do!

Now here’s the fun part, some tips to live by in life for you to align your lifestyle with the future you want to be in. Here are some tips that would lead you to Financial Freedom:

1. Live within your means

Knowing that the people around you are too busy to look at you would probably help limit you from showing off. More and more people are living in debt just to sustain a lifestyle they’re not capable with. Live a simple life and with more truthfulness to yourself and that’s where you’ll find your happiness if not, inner peace.

2. Be mindful and aware of your situation

When was the last time you’ve checked your finances in the bank?  Being aware where your money goes helps you better plan and be conscious of your spendings.   

3. Do your homework. Know more where you can put your money, make it work and benefit from it.

It is not a secret that rich people didn’t get rich by working their a$$ off. Instead, they are wise enough to know where to put their hard earned money and make it multiple without much work. Yes, I’m talking about investing. There’s different ways to do it and that’s why it’s called a homework. We don’t do spoon feeding here. A little words of wisdom though, “If they can do it, why can’t you?”

4. Plan your way of saving. 

Too much work and saving for the future can take a toll on you and your body. That’s why I recommend to plan how you save. This way, you’ll know when you should and when you can give yourself a break from saving and instead use it as an award for working so hard. Everybody needs some time to reinvigorate. Know that it’s after much needed rest that you usually come back stronger.

5. Take care of your credit score.

Take your Credit score is like taking care of your family name. Being in debt isn’t what anyone would wish to be in a position with. so being mindful of your responsibilities with your usage of credit cards and paying up loans is really a need. By trying to keep you name clean also means your finances are being kept well managed.

6. Monitor your spendings

Do you record your spendings? Or you just make calculations in your brain and hope that everything will simply fall in place with an extra of your salary as your savings. Mental calculation can be a great skill to have but in reality, with your plate so full with other responsibilities, the last thing you want is to forget that you don’t have enough money to buy food for the coming week and your salary only comes in 2 weeks from now. Believe me, it only takes 5 minutes to write down your expenses for the day, do basic calculation and that’s it! Make it a habit to do everyday and you’ll always know where your money goes. Plus, writing this down also means freeing your brain some space to use to focus on other more important things. 

7. Slowly change the way you budget

This comes together with #6 in this list, “Monitor your spendings”. Being mindful on your spendings would show loopholes on your budgeting and make you realise where you could do some adjustments. This way, you’ll know that you’re spending where you really need to and all unnecessary spendings can be allotted for better things.

8. If you have debt, make sure it’s a good debt. If not, make plans to pay them off, as soon as possible.

Misconceptions about debt has been embedded to most of us. In fact, most of us believe it is a negative thing. A few knowledgable ones though know how to take advantage of debt. 

9. An emergency fund is essential.

It is important to know that even if we don’t see a rainbow that often, there’s always tomorrow to look forward. That’s why knowing how to balance your finances for current necessities, saving should also be valued. We all don’t know what tomorrow would bring and it would keep our worries away if we know that an emergency fund is kept in case needed.

10. Career choices

One step to reaching Financial Freedom is being able to do something in life that you truly love doing that pays. As mentioned earlier, being tied up like a prisoner of your job just to keep you financially afloat ain’t gonna give you any good. Not only would you let your life fly by beneath your nose but you’re likely to regret not having the courage to use your lifetime to do something you love.

11. Learn how to invest

As risky at it can be, investing is still considered one of the best things you can place your hard earned money if you want to make them grow faster. Gone are the days where people just leave their money in the bank to earn interest. You are wise enough to know that bank interest barely make any difference to your money nowadays. It’s safe to say that keeping money in bank is just a way of safekeeping as it isn’t also safe to carry much cash around. By keeping an open-mind and gaining knowledge on how to invest, you’ll surely find one that would fit your interest.

12. Do something that has value, that would be your legacy.

Making a lot of money not only for you but for you to be able to pass as inheritance to your successors can be a great kind of legacy. But not everyone has the capability of doing that. Don’t worry though, legacy doesn’t only mean inheritance of wealth, it can also be other things. Do something great in your life and not only your family would remember you but more people you’ve helped.

It has been an honour to be given a chance to make a book review of the book, “The Unlikely Art of Parental Pressure“. This book has been written by respectable authors Dr. Chris Thurber and Dr. Hendrie Weisinger. With great works under their belt, I’ve got no doubt even before reading the first page that it would be an incredible, mind-opening and informative read.

True enough, my learnings from reading it went more than I expected it. While parenting in general has no rule book, reading materials where you’re given a sense of understanding whether you’re on the right path of doing things helps lessen ones worries, at least for me.

Parenting is probably one of the most important and hardest responsibility a person could have. What could be harder than being accountable for everything that happens to another person’s life. Not that parent’s are in control of their children’s life all through out their life but it is the parent’s who is in charge of a child especially during their prime years when their character and personality is still being moulded. This I may say is a very important aspect in someone’s life as whatever experience is learned during this childhood years is usually brought and can affect their adult life.

Together with the happiness and joy a child brings, not even before the time they see each other in person, but from the first time the parents hear their child’s heart beat is already an unexplainable episode in a parent’s life. Having experienced it twice in my life, I still got no words to describe how it feels, just thinking about it. That special moment happened to me and my hubby 6 and 7 years ago. Up until today, our daughters provide priceless bliss to our lives and gives us a purpose to always look forward to each and every waking day.

Let’s get real though, the stress they give everyday since they were born is also something!haha. Only parents/ guardians would know how much sacrifice it takes to raise a child. From the changes it brings to you physically (especially moms) to the emotional stress and let’s not forget how much raising a child challenges each parent financially. All of this for the love of a parent to their child. Whew!

I’m happy to say that gone are those sleepless nights for us. We get to joke around nowadays how exhausting it is to change nappies and prepare milk. We may be graduates of that phase already but that doesn’t mean we’re done. Nowadays, these two rascals fill our days with their quirkiness. Nursery rhymes turned to Disney and Nickelodeon shows where they expect us to memories songs like them. As they step up to their Primary education, were slowly setting our minds already that our lives would be filled with school homework and exams.

Being a parent never ends and never gets easy. It just evolves from one thing to another as your child goes through different phases of childhood. Nevertheless, each one only ain’t just a hard task but a joyful memory as well that every parent would remember all through their lives.

This newly released book, “The Unlikely Art of Parental Pressure”, gives parents and insight of what is really happening in the world of parenthood. As always, you don’t realise much what you are doing or rather give more thought to what you are into when your head is on the game. It’s only when you go out of the arena, watch from the outside and see the better picture that it becomes more clearer if what you’ve been doing is good or bad, helpful or not.

Truly there’s a lot of ways parenting can be made. Sticking to the main goal which is to bring out the best from our children for them to be better prepared for their future may always be in mind. Since there’s a very thin line dividing the interest of parents as well, most parents fall into the pit of unintentionally pressuring their children without them knowing. Books like this can help us better do our job.

Everyone’s life has been shaken since the Pandemic. As if life isn’t hard already, the challenge to keep afloat even became harder. Not only is every parent expected to adapt quickly to a new era and ways to do things (work from home) but also to help their children live with it too (homeschooling).

This time couldn’t be any sweeter if we think of it as a way for families to finally spend time with each other. It’s no secret that life has taken toll on all of us and we’ve been living in a fast paced life before the Pandemic happened. That’s one way of looking at it, however, like anything else, there’s a downfall to it. With kids spending more time with their parents close enough to always nag them in their every move, it’s only natural that they get into each other’s nerves more.

While every parent’s intention would always be for the best of their children, like what has been mentioned many times earlier, as humans, our natural competitiveness comes out with our children being our lead player. The focus on achieving the right pressure to our children for them to be successful in any matter can easily be transformed to harmful pressure without being mindful.

Without being mindful, examples like these happens:

Children doing their best = Children should be the best
Children learning from mistakes = Children shouldn’t have mistakes

As parents our primary role is to support our children until they’re old enough to be/do on their own certain tasks. Somehow along the way, this support gets mixed up with pressure from parents. The authors gave great examples that made it easier for parents to understand without having the feeling of being told what/how one should do their parenting. This examples have been perfectly described in different behaviours such as Importance, Opportunity, Competition, Perfection, Urgency, Control, and Display.

As you can tell, I can’t get enough of how much I appreciate this great book. Reading it wasn’t only an informative pleasure but really a help in realising how parenting works. With our society nowadays fast evolving, parents can’t rely solely from advice of elders as their parenting ways can be much more different from how things are done in this era. With children also having more access to information, parents would need to keep up with this.

I greatly recommend “The Unlikely Art of Parental Pressure” by Dr. Chris Thurber and Dr. Hendrie Weisinger as it isn’t just an eye-opener but it would make you think and realise of your own parenting ways without being pushy enough telling you to do things. Anyways, learning should never exhaust the mind but done in different ways or fun ways like reading.
