YES!!! You read that right! Contrary to all those who posted how this 3-ingredient Instagram-worthy coffee is easy to make. And here is why…
Ever since #covid-19 had been around and more people seemed to have more time at home, this famous coffee has been flooding our social media accounts. I bet most of you have also tried doing one also.
It was only last Thursday, that I gave it a try. And guess what! I tried it 3 times, and FAILED!!!! d-a-m-n!!!! Of all the times, now when we can’t easily go out to buy coffee and sugar…(not that Singapore is already on lockdown, it was just our choice not to go out).
Anyways, here’s what happened.
So as simple as the instruction was, I combined 2 tablespoons of our instant coffee, 2 tablespoons of sugar and warm water.
And so I mixed it a bit with my spoon, which didn’t come our creamy, like what they say. But my optimism was so high that I still tried to whip it. Take note that I used my trusty hand mixer in whipping.
Five minutes into whipping and even just holding the heavily shaking hand-mixer is making me tired already. What’s annoying is looking at what I ended up. Yes! No whip, whatsoever! By this time, I gave up and blamed myself for being lazy not using HOT WATER. If you read my first statement after the header, it said, “WARM” water. shucks!!!
Okay, now I’ve made sure to use hot water. I also noticed that I’m down to my last 2 sachets of 3-in-1 coffee. Our delivery would only come by next Monday. Oh well, this momma can survive a few days without coffee…. *fingers-crossed* for the sake of DALGONA!!!
I’ve been whipping for a good 20 minutes already BUT still didn’t get that whipped consistency a Dalgona should have. *damn!*
Okay, by this time, my hands are sweaty already and a bit pissed already of having this idea on my head and can’t get the outcome I’ve envisioned to be done in a blink of an eye. You get me?!?! errrr….. anyways, down to my last sachet of coffee, I still pushed through to it.
And as you can see in the photo above, I’m still not getting anywhere. You can also see in the background a purple box. hehehe…Out of frustration, I even tried adding some whipping cream but still to no avail. And so I gave up.
Ugh! I only got exhausted with all the whipping and washing of dishes. (More of washing the dishes, I hate doing that!) Luckily I saved all those failed coffee mixtures and bwala! Works well also as a coffee mix. hehehe.
NEXT DAY: 4TH ATTEMPT
That Dalgona was still in my head the morning I woke up, so when you have a lot of time at home, you sure have time to look at all the nooks of your home for a sachet of coffee. That’s what I did and guess what! My stash of hotel goodies suddenly came to life!!!
***Side story: I don’t know about you, but whenever we go out on a trip and stay on hotels, I make sure to bring all those free stuff. From shampoo, soap, toothbrush, slippers, tea and COFFEE!!! Well, this for sure became handy for my dalgona project. *wink!*
Going back to the story, and so I found some coffee and used it. The moment I opened it and put it in a bowl, I already noticed the difference and know that this time, I’m gonna make it! You know why?
I’m sure you’ll notice the color. It only dawns to me that when they say coffee / 3-in-1, they didn’t say all kind would give the same result. Our coffee at home is this 100% freeze-dried coffee. The consistency of this coffee to begin isn’t for Dalgona.
And so I continued to whip. You’ll notice that the sides are already build up. The photo below is just after 2 minutes of whipping.
Can you hear my ears clapping?!? 4 minutes into it and the color lightened already and froth is coming….yihee!!!
And here it is! After 10 minutes, at last!!!

Questions to myself while contemplating about my experience.
- Q: So how was it? Does it taste good?
- A: Not really. It’s a bit bitter for my tastebud. Maybe 3 spoons of sugar to 2 spoons of coffee would taste better. It’s actually difficult to drink it as the coffee doesn’t mix well with the milk as it’s cold, so most of it just floats around and you’re like drinking milk then suddenly have some whipped coffee afterward.
- Q: Was it worth the time to do?
- A: If I was able to use the right kind of coffee the first time, well, maybe….*Doing it for IG kinda moment*
- Q: Will I do it again?
- A: Nah! I’d rather just boil some water and pour my 3-in-1 coffee in a cup, pour water, stir a bit and sit on my favorite couch!
- Q: Will you recommend others to do it?
- A: Hmmm….. for my sisters, maybe, for my parents?!? hahaha… I could already hear my mom’s voice 2,355 kilometers away screaming. Why go all the fuss just for a cup of coffee, right?!
